I found Don Tapscott’s keynote to be very interesting. I agree with his point of view on the advancement of education. There have been great advancements in the technology in our daily lives that is changing the way the world works. In every other profession the technology has made great advancements. Tapscott says if people such as doctors and businessmen and many people in other professions came back from 100 years ago they would be shocked at the changes and advancements that have happened. In surgery the new tools, cameras and surgical procedures that are being used. A businessman coming back from 100 years ago would see instant conversations with people all over the world, video conversations so they are face to face and quick access a trip that once would have taken months by boat are now hours by plane.
Why is it that there is all this technology around us that is not being implemented in students learning? I think that there have been some changes in students learning. The internet being a major change; you used to have to go to the library to research or go to people you had access to but know you can use search engines that are available such as
google or
yahoo. Through the internet email allows students to reach out to knowledgeable people who they might not normally be able to collaborate with. In my class the majority of students have a laptop and so this has caused hand written assignments to be less and less common and typed assignments are much more frequent. Through emails students can check in with their teachers and set up times to meet if they need help or we can email our work to our teachers and they can type in comments and changes that we can make which improves our grades and our understanding of the assignments. I think the next step for education is to video the classes so that if a student is sick at home or away on a school sports trip they can easily catch up with the work and students in the class can look back at the class which would also change study techniques and classes. Students would no longer have to take notes and listen at the same time but could have their entire attention on the class.
We looked at a video in class about how one persons prediction for the future of education would be that we would no longer have to come to school. I think that this would be a great loss for the students because school is not only about the work and education but it is about learning how to socialize and how to work together. I think if people no longer had to go to school the entire system of socialization would fall apart. It would happen slowly but I think people would no longer live together but in their own little bubble where they would no longer have to interact with anyone.
Tapscott is right the advancements in technology do need to be implemented into education but there have been some changes in education they are just not as major as in some other professions.
