Joseph's post-project reflection blog post

During the 2008 Flat Classroom Project, I learned the difference between a Social Operating System (SOS) and a Social Network System (SNS). An SOS has artificial intelligence (AI) and SNS doesn't. With AI, SOS can tell the difference among your friends, family members, and business acquaintances. This will help you when you need to send messages or edit your page so that certain people can see certain things. This sort of project is very important because, in the future, businesses will have to… Continue

Horizon Project 2008 Reflection

In the Horizon Project I learned about how social operating systems are affecting our lives in science, health, and the environment. The category I focused on was science. I learned that scientists are criticizing the internet because many people are overlooking their work and focusing on blogs written by popular bloggers. This is frustrating many scientists because they are losing their authority on the internet. This project is very important because not only do we learn about new, upcoming t… Continue

Reflection

To be a part of Horizon Project was an interesting experience. I enjoyed learning about the different ways that we affect the world through the internet. I learned the advantages and disadvantages of the way technology has become. This project is important to me just as it should be important to everyone who took part in it. My group was mobile broadband, and we used the wiki to discuss the different ways that it can be used… Continue

What did I learn about this project? It is tough. In my Group Collective sharing of Knowledge I did a video on the group the BD Jammers. This video was a time consuming project, but it was worth every minute. I learned all about how people are using the internet for other purposes than just entertainment. People are now using the internet to accomplish their dreams. This project was amazing and… Continue

Post Project Reflection

I learned tons of things about how education and 3D coinside. 3D computing and education are for affect age groups as small as todlers. Their favorite cartoon characters are 3D computerized images. 3D is in all of the cartoons and computer/video games that childeren, and even adults love to play. Without 3D we would not be able to recreate crime scenes and catch the fugitives. This type of project is very important, because it teaches us to trust each other to pull their weight, and trust each o… Continue

The Horizon Project is Over...

On the Horizon Project, I learned a lot about my topic: Grassroots Video. I learned all about how there are all kinds of websites that will allow you to instantly stream video onto the internet. I think that these kinds of projects are important because we learn how to communicate with people from all over the world, and we learn how to edit and create videos. I think that the highlight of the project was when other peop… Continue

Horizon Project Post-project reflection

I learned about virtual worlds and how it can be just like the real world. Also, I learned about the environment and the Earth and how bad it is to litter, because my sub-group is about the environment and how games have taught kids to save the Earth. Here is a link to my wiki page http://horizonproject2008.wikispaces.com/GPP+Science_Health And to me this project is both important and not important. One Of Nature's Greatest Forces Is The Mind
One Of Nature's Greatest Forces Is The Mind

According to our sub group, Collective intelligence is the name given to an intangible establishment that holds the knowledge of a community of people. This community knows no distance and has no barriers as people unite and contribute from all over the globe. It can be better explained through the trends of human nature. Humans are different and aside from our similar skeleton, humans have found their ways to be different and separate from one another. One of the most significant differences between humans noted by psychologists for many years has been the differences of intelligences. But at the same time society calls for the unity of these intelligences. Just as human nature calls for physical and emotional unity, society calls for intellectual eclecticism to create a diverse community where everyone can find a place. With Collective Intelligence everybody's contribution becomes significant. All people contribute and benefit from the resourceful/ min-educational cybernetic institutions founded by one and gaining value after the multiple use and visits of many others.

Technology has been the catalyst for the immense dissemination of ideas. Clearly, with the 2008 election in the U.S., Americans are aware of the never ending contribution of thoughts and suggestions on what the U.S. really needs to succeed. Interestingly enough, more and more potential voters are parading their beliefs through the internet; on blogs, on their personal pages, on news websites, and through discussions they also create in their personal cybernetic experiences [ex. IM, e-mail]. At the same time, all around the world, people are aware of how absolutely necessary opinions and arguments are for their country, for politics, for change in general to occur. In fact, it is because of collective intelligence that more ordinary people, are finding a place, a voice in their society. It is self evident as we observe through news, statistics, and personal experience that general categories such as sex, race and age, can no longer typify and/or measure intellectual contribution.

In the vast reign of business and employment collective intelligence allows us human beings a `Citius, Altius, Fortius´ (faster, higher, stronger) world, where transactions between people can happen in seconds rather than long sleepless working hours. Most importantly in the business world, predictions can now be made, with people working together, sharing their information with each other. This creates opportunities not only for businesses men but also for the modern you and me. Opportunities exist now as jobs for prediction markets for instance in firms like InTrade or BetFair.

Government and Politics in OUR Real World

Government and Politics

Government and Politics
Topic: What is happening relating to this topic in government and politics. Include links, examples, and an overview in your words. Must include some graphics and/or videos. Include both the RUNNING of government AND the elections process (you may wish to split this into two topics.)
Suggested word count: up to 300 words, may be far less

"SECURITY SECURITY SECURITY!"
This is an issue that has worried citizens for ages as they seek to protect their society from constant vigilance and violations of privacy. Nevertheless, as presidents offer 'homeland security' and 'school zone security' as the tangible security each civilian needs to feel at peace, more and more the trepidation once caused by lack of cybernetic security is being lost. Now, while people consistently seek reassurance that their data is being secured in a safe database somewhere and click their life away, they are participating in the online world of decision making more often. In 2007 the United States was rated first of 20 countries on the 'Top Internet Users Scale.' Clearly, more and more people are finding the internet a place to be.

PRESENTLY:Due to the vast opportunities of communication with collective intelligence, as the contributions to online websites, blogs and surveys increase, there is a noticeable increase in the interest people have in giving their opinions in the politics of their communities, cities and countries.
-There are projects such as "The Eventful Politics Project" where people are encouraged to form and organize lobby groups for their preferred candidate during elections.
-Other sites encourage communication between people and the presidential candidates themselves as people present a certain date and event they would like the candidate to participate in. There is also a helpful sideline telling the person visiting the page what candidate is in most demand, helpful to know when inviting a candidate to an imminent event. It is a very well organized, easy to join website. ( Eventful Politics ).

teenage.jpg

Many people are commenting that the 2008 Elections in the United States are most impressive not only because of the characteristics of the candidates but also those of the voters. This election has been able to stir up interest in many adolescents and young voters all around the country. While the youth may not be able to inflict change on the election process through voting many have found ways to voice their preference on who should be the next president through groups and icons on their online networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook. A Marie Claire Magazine comments that Barack Obama leads the race in the number of MySpace friends , with 191,241 (Hillary Clinton is next, with 146,504). For other fun facts look at Interesting Election Facts .

CONS: Some people comment that online activities presently being tried out (i.e. online fundraising) are only going to be a downfall in political financing. The trepidation caused by monetary interactions of such high value being exchanged in the untrustworthy online world is making politicians and government officials chary of allowing this to escalate into the norm.

There is an interesting contrast to the physical vocalization of opinions on the politics [how things are being done] of government [the running of government itself] versus the online battles people are fighting against the government.

SOON: IMG_0756.JPG
-Elections will be held online directly onto a page where the polls will be visible to all who keep the window open. It will be like a virtual voting booth where everyone anonymously places their vote and is counted immediately.

-Anybody will have the privilege of being present at a press conference, nonetheless, only elected people will be chosen to speak. There will be virtual seating for thousands of people in press conferences and other political events.

"BUSINESS REPUTATION"
All companies all over the world spend millions of dollars on property or business reputation. They conduct background investigations because they believe today's hiring choices can be a critical predictor of tomorrow's business success or failure. This is a really big issues in almost every company today.
Background investigations provide employers the information they need to make the best possible hiring choices. Information research services are also available for employers who conduct employment investigations in-house. Design programs to meet the specific risks and requirements of individual employers and will work with you to correlate the level of background research to the level of authority and responsibility required for the job. This will allow you to control costs while maintaining sufficient screening standards.

Impact on Education

Background

Educational environment has become an entirely commonplace for technology. Educators are increasingly using digital tools to support class room teaching and learning. As technology is being included in most students' curriculum lecturers realize that technology applications can enhance student learning by offering diversity of knowledge, facilitating problem solving and creativity and provides opportunities for all students to become active, empowerment learners. As teachers increase their range of technology skills, they become familiar with sites for locating materials to support the needs of ethnically, culturally, linguistically, and ability-diverse culturally and linguistically students. The Internet plays a crucial role in helping teachers transform their curricula by providing space for a diversity of perspectives, perspectives and experiences.

The Internet is reputable with reliable Web sites that provide free, easy-to-use tools for classroom teachers to for example build Web pages and/or create lessons and rubrics. They can also obtain royalty-free clip art and images to enhance the learner's train of thought. Utilizing online surveys and quizzes can also be benefited from internet access. When the educator locates a useful Internet page, the Web address, known as the URL, can be recorded saved in the Web browser's Bookmarks or Favorites file, so that it can be located easily again. again easily. Over time, the learner may accumulate an extensive collection of reliable educational Web sites that can be shared with his/her colleagues.

With the widespread implementation and use of the Internet as a source of knowledge and distribution, a number of libraries have extended from their traditional location to the World Wide Web. They offer categorized and annotated "lists and links" for general fiction, genre fiction, award winners, book lists and recommendations, as well as "resources useful in reader's advisory work" for librarians. Libraries are increasingly starting as digital libraries first rather than common locations in districts or regions. This is a prime example of Collective Sharing and Generation of Knowledge being utilized educationally via the internet.

Moodle at Kyoto Gakuen

Moodle is an open source course management system we use for creating online learning communities or courseware. It is downloaded from the internet for free and can be used for KG-12, college work and community organizing.

However, it is just a base for creating which means the user has to organize the page by himself. Time consumption is one of the main disadvantages of it.
On the other hand some do business by organizing the pages. Teachers or some people who do not have any time to make the pages ask to set up the pages. The price is different between the seller.

Kyoto Gakuen has been using moodle since 2002 and it is for IT and ICT (now it changed name: International ICT ) classes. The page's name is Kelp (Kyotogakuen E-Learning Program) The IT teacher created and adminstered the page. The students exploit moodle for the exams Especially English. For example there are multiple choice questions and the sentences have a blank then the students chose the answer from 4 choices. If the student has the correct answer the student will have collect page but if the student has the wrong answer the student will try again. It has a lot of advantage.

The other teacher used to use moodle in class. The page’s name was X English Learning System. He gave homework which was Reading. The students had to translate English to Japanese then the teacher check and giving answers. He said this system is very useful because he could check student’s answers very easy and quickly. In addition, he could paste the answers which was on the Internet that is why he did not have to write answers by his hand and again and again. It helped to cut time to check home work and if the students had done again and again it would have been power of English.

College Education

There has been a breakthrough in college education in which a whole new way of learning has been established. Many colleges have now been giving out online lectures, exams, and readings. This is very helpful to those students already enrolled in these institutes but it is also helpful to other outside of this learning circle. These courses may help expand the knowledge and ability to learn for those student who have the courses in front of them and not permit for them to fall behind in later studies. Such professors may have a massive amount of students to teach and so web 2.0 tools can become very helpful to them. Through these tools teachers can actually see their students develop and leave comments electronically making any papers or assignments accessible virtually anywhere. This also affect the plagiarism and intellectual property of the aspect in which students have to be original because websites like www.turnitin.com can detect plagiarism in a few seconds. These tools allow for maximum accessibility and the ability to keep intellectual property safe. This project itself would be a great example of collective sharing and generation of knowledge. We have had a distribution of roles across many places and have gained an online environment in which team work and communication is important.
